The home-sharing race to the bottom—and why we stopped adding inventory

When an industry rewards price over operating quality, more inventory can deepen the wrong problem.

SubHome’s 2018 scale created momentum and a public target of 3,000 keys. That figure was a target, not an achieved outcome.

By mid-2019, management judged the market to be a race to the bottom and stopped taking new properties. Revenue reached RM12m that year, but the operating decision was to prioritise a different model rather than chase the headline target.

A strong strategy makes room for stopping. The useful question is not only whether a platform can grow, but whether each additional unit strengthens the economics and the guest proposition.
